Interesting Facts About Andrew Mayer Cohen
Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mayer Hawthorne’s stage name is a fusion of his real middle name, Mayer, and Hawthorne Road, the street of his upbringing. He celebrated his Bar Mitzvah in 1992 at Temple Beth Emeth in Ann Arbor, Michigan, underscoring his Jewish heritage.
Hawthorne’s artistic journey began as a member of the group Athletic Mic League (as DJ Haircut) in Ann Arbor before relocating to Los Angeles in 2005.
He caught the attention of Stones Throw Records’ label head, Peanut Butter Wolf, and was signed to the label. Initially, the tracks created by Hawthorne were intended for sampling and personal pleasure, but Peanut Butter Wolf insisted they be transformed into an album. Remarkably, Hawthorne had no prior vocal training.
His debut single, “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out”/”When I Said Goodbye,” released on a red heart-shaped 7″ record on Stones Throw Records on November 4, 2008, marked the beginning of his solo career.
This was followed by the release of his second single, “Maybe So, Maybe No”/”I Wish It Would Rain,” on a 12″ record on April 19, 2009. His debut album, “A Strange Arrangement,” dropped on CD and LP on Stones Throw Records on September 8, 2009.
Hawthorne’s musical contributions extended to the Kanye West/Spike Jonze short film “We Were Once a Fairytale,” featuring his song “When I Said Goodbye.” He also collaborated with Sebastian on the song “Love in Motion” in 2011.
A guest on Daryl Hall’s Live From Daryl’s House webcast in July 2011, Hawthorne showcased his talent alongside famed Memphis/Stax Records keyboardist Booker T. Jones. They performed various tracks, highlighting Hawthorne’s skills as a hip-hop DJ who began recording his Motown-style tracks to avoid sampling fees.
Television appearances included performances on the Conan TV show and the Late Show with David Letterman in 2011. In 2012, he released the live EP “KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic” as part of Record Store Day’s Black Friday.
In 2013, Hawthorne released the single “Her Favorite Song” from the album “Where Does This Door Go,” showcasing a departure from his throwback style. This album earned him a Grammy nomination for “Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.”
Mayer Hawthorne’s influences span classic artists like Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, and Steely Dan, as well as more contemporary figures like J Dilla and Santigold.
His song “Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin'” featured in the Ugly Betty finale, and “Do It,” released under the alias ‘Tuxedo’ with Jake One, was sampled on Pitbull’s track of the same name.
Hawthorne’s track “Love Like That” found a place in the video game Forza Horizon 3, and “The Walk” was used in a Blue Moon beer TV commercial in 2017 and the Fox television series Fringe.
Notably, “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” was featured in a scene from the Girls episode “All Adventurous Women Do” in 2012.
