David Cheung Chi-kong, JP, was a prominent figure in Hong Kong, known for his contributions as an educator, pastor, and former member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. His life, marked by dedication to education and public service, left a lasting impact on the community he served.
David Cheung’s educational journey began with his studies at Wah Yan College in Kowloon, New Method College, and Hong Kong Baptist College (now known as Baptist University). He pursued further studies in Education Administration at the University of Kansas, expanding his knowledge and skills in the field of education.
In 1988, David Cheung was appointed to the Legislative Council by Governor David Wilson. His appointment was significant, as it aimed to balance the interests of grassroots educators represented by Szeto Wah in the Teaching functional constituency. Cheung’s presence in the Legislative Council provided a voice for the elite and contributed to the diverse representation in the legislative body.
David Cheung was a strong advocate for mother-tongue education. As the principal of Carmel Secondary School, he played a pivotal role in implementing the shift from English to Cantonese Chinese as the teaching language, aligning with the recommendation of the Department of Education in 1987. Despite facing challenges and opposition, Cheung remained committed to promoting mother-tongue education for the benefit of students.
However, Cheung eventually resigned from his position as principal, recognizing the difficulties of swimming against the tide. His decision reflected his integrity and unwavering principles, even in the face of adversity.
Following his tenure in Hong Kong, David Cheung relocated to St. Louis, Missouri, United States, where he spent the remainder of his life until his passing in 2013. Despite his move, his legacy continued to resonate, leaving an indelible mark on the fields of education and public service in Hong Kong.
