Interesting Facts About Joe Pesci

  • A young Pesci was no stranger to the stage; he started performing in New York stage productions at the tender age of five. By the time he was ten, he was a regular on the television variety show “Startime Kids,” which aired on New York’s WNBT (now WNBC) from 1950 to 1955.
  • As a teenager, Pesci became friends with Frankie Valli and Tommy DeVito, eventually introducing them to songwriter Bob Gaudio. This introduction led to the formation of the rock band The Four Seasons.
  • Around the same time, Pesci developed a passion for music and played guitar for various pop and rock bands, most notably Joey Dee and the Starliters. This musical stint also led to his first, albeit uncredited, feature film appearance in “Hey, Let’s Twist!” in 1961.
  • In 1968, Pesci released a solo album, “Little Joe Sure Can Sing!” under the name Joe Ritchie, which unfortunately did not garner much success. He then formed a comedy duo with Frank Vincent, performing songs and comedy acts in New Jersey clubs.
  • They also appeared in the Broadway show “The New Vaudevillians” in 1975.
  • His film career started to take shape when he debuted in the 1976 low-budget crime drama “The Death Collector.” Despite the positive reviews, offers for new roles were sparse. However, Robert De Niro, impressed by Pesci’s performance, recommended him to Martin Scorsese for “Raging Bull” (1980).
  • Pesci’s portrayal of Joey LaMotta earned him a BAFTA and nominations for both the Golden Globe and Academy Awards.
  • Throughout the 1980s, Pesci continued to diversify his portfolio with films like “I’m Dancing as Fast as I Can,” “Dear Mr. Wonderful,” “Eureka,” and “Easy Money.” His role in “Goodfellas” (1990) finally earned him an Academy Award.
  • Pesci retired in 1999 but made a significant comeback with “The Irishman” in 2019, garnering numerous awards and nominations once again.
  • Pesci has been married three times, all ending in divorce. He has two daughters, one from his first marriage and another, model Tiffany Pesci, from his third marriage to Claudia Haro.
